HISTORY
Manhattan was one of the first five cities designated to join the Kansas Main Street program in 1985.
The Kansas Main Street program is a self-help program established on the foundation of a common-
sense approach to tackling issues of revitalization, capitalizing on downtown’s history and identifying
the resources of the community itself. In 2002 The Manhattan Main Street program officially became
Downtown Manhattan, Inc.
VISION STATEMENT
Residents and downtown business owners alike are proud of the vibrant well-maintained historic
center of the community. It provides a unique lifestyle for the many that choose to live in its safe
pedestrian environment; the downtown is home to city and county government, professional offices,
specialty retail, fine restaurants, entertainment, and recreational activities. Riverfront access and the
extended “redevelopment’ area provide additional opportunities for activity and recreation. Downtown
is a gathering place for residents of all ages and cultures as they discover downtown over and over.
MISSION STATEMENT
Downtown Manhattan, Inc. is a not-for-profit community volunteer agency working in areas of
organization, promotion, economic restructuring and design to increase consumer business; to
strengthen professional and retail business institutions; to assist in the preservation and
maintenance of the heart of the community’s heritage; and to promote pride in the community’s
institutions and achievements for the benefit of the entire Manhattan community.
